HEIDENHAIN 245-0416 - Serial data transmission is faulty

Serial data transmission is faulty

Serial communication between devices is experiencing faults. Data transmission is unreliable due to configuration or hardware issues.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm originates from corrupted or missing data packets on the serial encoder interface, most commonly EnDat protocol. The TNC control's DSP continuously monitors checksum validation and communication timing; when error thresholds are exceeded, the drive system is disabled for safety. Physical cable issues, electrical noise, or encoder electronics failure are the primary root causes.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Inspect cable routing and connectors

Physically examine encoder cable for kinks, sharp bends (minimum 10x cable diameter), or damage near cable carriers. Check connector security at both encoder and X116/X118 inputs on UMC/CC unit.

Power down machine before disconnecting encoder cables to prevent encoder coupling module damage.

  2. 2

    Measure shield resistance

Using multimeter, measure resistance between cable shield and protective earth at control cabinet entry point. Should be <0.1 Ohm. Check shield connection uses proper EMC cable glands with 360° contact.

Heidenhain recommends shield continuity check with cable slightly flexed - intermittent faults often only appear during motion.

  3. 3

    Perform cable swap test

Temporarily swap encoder cable with known-good spare or cable from functioning axis. If alarm follows cable, replace with genuine Heidenhain cable maintaining exact length specifications.

Never use field-assembled encoder cables on EnDat - factory-made cables have controlled impedance and matched propagation delays critical for serial communication.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Hardware interface card failure suspected
  • ·Multiple interface parameters corrupted
  • ·TNC requires firmware update for compatibility

Prevention

  • Document working interface configurations before changes
  • Use high-quality shielded cables for serial connections
  • Implement regular communication testing procedures
  • Keep external device drivers and TNC software updated

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing up null-modem vs straight-through cables
  • Setting incorrect baud rates between devices
  • Forgetting to enable hardware handshaking
  • Using excessive cable lengths without signal conditioning
