HEIDENHAIN 23A-0033 - Error in communication with device

Error in communication with device

This TNC7/TNC 640 error indicates a communication failure with a connected device. FSuC: invalid parameter transfer the affected component ID number: the device, serial number: the unit The control cannot establish or maintain proper data exchange.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm originates from a breakdown in the communication protocol between the TNC control's main processor and a specific peripheral device on the internal bus network. The device either stopped responding to cyclic communication requests, sent corrupted data packets, or became physically disconnected from the system bus. Heidenhain controls monitor these devices continuously and trigger this alarm when timeout thresholds are exceeded.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Identify the failing device

Read the complete alarm text to note the device number/name shown in the %2 parameter. Cross-reference this with MOD 94 (Machine Configuration) to determine the physical device type and location.

Write down the exact alarm text including the %2 parameter before clearing - this information may disappear and is critical for diagnosis.

  2. 2

    Inspect system bus connections

Open the control cabinet and locate the identified device. Check all connectors on the CC (communication controller) and device side, particularly X116 (PLC bus), X126 (encoder interface), and device-specific connections. Look for loose screws, bent pins, or cable damage.

Disconnect main power before opening the cabinet. Wait 5 minutes for capacitors to discharge before touching components.

  3. 3

    Reseat all connections

Disconnect and firmly reconnect all cables associated with the failing device. Ensure locking screws are properly tightened (hand-tight plus 1/4 turn). Check cable strain relief to prevent future loosening.

Apply dielectric grease to connectors in high-vibration environments to improve contact reliability.

  4. 4

    Verify cable continuity

With power OFF, use a multimeter to check continuity on each conductor of the suspect cable. For shielded cables, verify shield continuity and proper grounding at both ends. Replace any cable showing open circuits or intermittent connections.

Service Recommendedmedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·FSuC module hardware failure
  • ·Safety parameter corruption requiring recertification
  • ·Firmware compatibility issues
  • ·Any safety system modifications needed

Prevention

  • Regular FSuC parameter backup
  • Monitor FSuC communication statistics
  • Keep TNC and FSuC firmware versions synchronized
  • Protect FSuC cables from mechanical damage

Common Mistakes

  • Modifying safety parameters without proper authorization
  • Ignoring FSuC communication error counters
  • Attempting FSuC reset without safety lockout
  • Mixing incompatible TNC and FSuC software versions
