HEIDENHAIN 23A-0034 - Error in communication with device

Error in communication with device

An error occurred at an HSCI interface. The local error register is set and communication is disrupted.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm is triggered when the CC unit's internal bus monitoring detects a communication timeout or protocol error with a specific peripheral device. The root cause is either a physical connection problem in the internal communication path, a failed peripheral module, or a configuration mismatch where the control expects a device that is not properly responding.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Identify the failing PLC module

Check the alarm text parameter %2 to identify the module number. Cross-reference with your system documentation to determine which physical PL6xxx module (PL6000, PL6010, etc.) is assigned this device number.

Write down the exact alarm text including the device number - this corresponds to the module's position in the PLC configuration.

  2. 2

    Inspect X116/X126 connections

Power down the control. Check the X116 (or X126 depending on system) cable connection between the main CC unit and the PLC module. Reseat both ends firmly. Inspect cable for pinching or damage, especially near cable management areas.

Disconnect main power and wait for all LEDs to extinguish before touching any internal connections.

  3. 3

    Check PLC module LEDs

During control startup, observe the LED indicators on the PL module front panel. The RUN LED should be solid green. If flashing or red, the module has detected an internal error or configuration problem.

LED patterns are documented in the PLC Hardware Manual - reference ID: 1134038-xx series.

  4. 4

    Verify PLC configuration matches hardware

Access MOD function, select 'System Settings', then 'PLC Configuration'. Verify the module type and position configured in software matches the physically installed module. Look for red indicators showing communication loss.

If configuration was recently changed via backup restore, the module assignments may not match your actual installed hardware.

  5. 5

    Test with module substitution

If available, swap the suspect PL module with a known good identical module. Transfer the configuration if necessary. If alarm moves with the module, hardware is faulty. If alarm stays at same position, check cabling or CC unit interface.

Ensure replacement module is exact same model number - PL6xxx modules are not universally interchangeable.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·HSCI interface card replacement needed
  • ·Multiple encoder failures
  • ·Persistent issues after cable/connection verification

Prevention

  • Regular HSCI cable inspection and replacement
  • Maintain proper cable routing and EMI shielding
  • Periodic encoder cleaning and mounting verification
  • Monitor system grounding integrity

Common Mistakes

  • Disconnecting HSCI cables while powered
  • Using non-Heidenhain HSCI cables
  • Ignoring EMI sources during installation
  • Incorrect encoder parameter configuration
