HEIDENHAIN 23A-0037 - Error in communication with device

Error in communication with device

This TNC7/TNC 640 error indicates a communication failure with a connected device. HSCI: self-test of interface failed the affected component ID number: the device, serial number: the unit The control cannot establish or maintain proper data exchange

Root Cause Summary

This alarm is triggered when the TNC control's cyclic communication handler detects a timeout or invalid response from a configured peripheral device on the digital fieldbus network. The control expects regular data exchange within defined cycle times, and when a device fails to respond or sends corrupted data frames, the communication watchdog raises error 23A-0037. Physical disconnection, device failure, or configuration errors are the primary root causes.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Inspect HSCI cable connections

Power down the control and check the HSCI cable at X116 connector on the TNC control and corresponding connector on the inverter module. Ensure locking screws are tight and pins are not bent or corroded.

Disconnect main power and wait 5 minutes for DC bus capacitors to discharge before handling HSCI connections.

  2. 2

    Check cable continuity

Using a multimeter, verify continuity on all HSCI cable conductors. The HSCI uses differential signal pairs - check for shorts between signal lines and shield ground.

HSCI cables should not exceed 50 meters total length and must be shielded with 360-degree shield connection at both ends.

  3. 3

    Replace HSCI cable if damaged

If cable shows wear, pinching, or continuity faults, replace with genuine Heidenhain HSCI cable (ID: 354770-xx series). After replacement, restart control and verify device appears in MOD > Device Configuration.

Route HSCI cables separately from power cables to avoid electromagnetic interference affecting communication.

Service Recommendedmedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·HSCI module replacement required
  • ·Firmware update failures
  • ·Persistent communication errors after basic troubleshooting

Prevention

  • Regular parameter backups
  • Periodic cable inspection
  • EMI source monitoring
  • Firmware update tracking

Common Mistakes

  • Interrupting firmware updates
  • Ignoring cable shielding requirements
  • Mixing incompatible firmware versions
  • Skipping parameter documentation before changes
