HEIDENHAIN 231-D400 - D400 Data transm. SPL to CC, watchdog error at HSCI addr.

D400 Data transm. SPL to CC, watchdog error at HSCI addr.

This TNC7/TNC 640 communication error indicates a problem with the HSCI bus or device communication. Data transmission error in the HSCI system

Root Cause Summary

This alarm occurs when the real-time watchdog timer expires because expected data packets from the SPL signal processing module failed to arrive at the CC contouring control within the specified time window via the HSCI interface. The root cause is typically hardware-related: faulty HSCI cabling, a failing SPL board, or less commonly, a CC board issue or severe EMI disrupting the high-speed internal control bus.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Power down the control safely

Switch off the main control power at the cabinet. Wait at least 30 seconds for capacitors to discharge before opening the control housing.

Ensure machine emergency stop is engaged and follow lockout/tagout procedures before accessing control electronics.

  2. 2

    Inspect HSCI cable connections

Locate the HSCI ribbon cables or shielded cables connecting the CC board (main processor board) to the SPL module rack. Check both ends for proper seating in connectors, bent pins, and cable damage. The HSCI address in the alarm indicates which SPL position to focus on.

HSCI cables are typically flat ribbon cables with keyed connectors. Note the orientation key to prevent reverse insertion during reconnection.

  3. 3

    Reseat HSCI connections

Carefully disconnect and reconnect the HSCI cable at both the CC board and the SPL module corresponding to the HSCI address shown in %1. Ensure connectors click or seat fully with no gaps.

Use a non-conductive tool to release locking tabs if present. Clean contacts with contact cleaner if corrosion or dust is visible.

  4. 4

    Test after reconnection

Power up the control and observe if alarm 231-D400 clears during startup. Monitor for several minutes during normal operation to ensure the watchdog error does not recur.

Access MOD → System Diagnostic → Event Log to check if communication errors are logged even when alarm doesn't trigger.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·PL module replacement required
  • ·Multiple HSCI modules affected
  • ·Parameter backup corruption

Prevention

  • Perform monthly HSCI cable inspection
  • Maintain proper cable separation from power lines
  • Regular backup of machine parameters
  • Monitor PL module LED status during routine maintenance

Common Mistakes

  • Disconnecting HSCI cables with power on
  • Ignoring intermittent communication LED indicators
  • Modifying HSCI parameters without backup
  • Using non-Heidenhain replacement cables
