HEIDENHAIN 230-049D - A parameter change requires switching off the drive

A parameter change requires switching off the drive

A parameter change affecting directional bits requires the drive to be switched off first for safety.

Root Cause Summary

Parameter changes affecting fundamental drive operation, motor commutation, or safety functions require a complete hardware reset that can only be achieved through a full power cycle. The drive firmware needs to reinitialize with the new parameters loaded from non-volatile memory during the startup sequence. Simply resetting the control software or using EMERGENCY STOP is insufficient for these low-level drive configuration changes.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Verify Parameter Changes

Check which motor or encoder parameters were modified via MOD > MACHINE PARAMETERS > AXIS PARAMETERS or MOD > DRIVE CONFIGURATION. Common parameters include motor poles (CfgMotPol), encoder type (CfgEncTyp), or EnDat encoder settings.

Use the parameter change log in MOD > SYSTEM INFO > PARAMETER CHANGES to see exactly what was modified and when.

  2. 2

    Document Current Configuration

Record all modified parameters and verify they match the physical motor and encoder installed on the machine. Cross-reference with motor nameplate data and encoder documentation.

Incorrect motor parameters can cause severe mechanical damage or runaway conditions upon restart.

  3. 3

    Perform Controlled Shutdown

Use the TNC shutdown procedure: Move all axes to safe position, exit all programs, select MOD > SHUTDOWN or use the operating system shutdown function. Wait for confirmation before proceeding.

  4. 4

    Execute Full Power Cycle

Switch off main power disconnect. Wait minimum 30 seconds for complete DC bus discharge. Power up system and observe drive initialization sequence during TNC boot. Monitor PLC log for drive enable sequence.

For iTNC 530 and TNC 620/640, watch the boot screen to confirm all drives complete their initialization phase without errors.

  5. 5

    Verify Drive Functionality

After successful boot, execute controlled axis movements in Manual mode. Check encoder monitoring, commutation quality, and verify no following errors occur. Use MOD > DIAGNOSIS > DRIVE STATUS to confirm proper operation.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·PLC programming modifications required
  • ·Encoder wiring issues suspected
  • ·Repeated alarms after parameter corrections

Prevention

  • Always disable drives before changing directional parameters
  • Document original parameter values before modifications
  • Use PLC interlocks for automatic parameter changes

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to disable drives before parameter changes
  • Changing wrong axis direction parameter
  • Not performing reference run after direction changes
