HEIDENHAIN 1A1-0047 - The control cannot change the tool orientation because no rotary axes are defined

The control cannot change the tool orientation because no rotary axes are defined

The program or operator asked to change tool orientation, but the machine kinematics contain no rotary axes. Without rotaries, the control cannot tilt or reorient the tool.

Root Cause Summary

The control has been commanded to reorient the tool vector in space, but the machine configuration does not include rotary axes necessary to perform this movement. This typically indicates either a programming error (using 5-axis functions on a 3-axis machine) or incomplete machine parameter configuration where rotary axes exist physically but are not properly defined in the control's kinematic chain.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Access machine parameters

Press MOD key, enter machine parameter access code, navigate to General > All Parameters or use search function for MP110

Machine parameter changes require proper authorization and may affect machine behavior. Document original values before making changes.

  2. 2

    Check MP110 axis configuration

Examine MP110 for each channel. Verify that rotary axes (A, B, or C) are assigned. Value should indicate axis type (e.g., 'A' for rotary around X, 'B' for rotary around Y, 'C' for rotary around Z).

On iTNC 530 and TNC 640, also check MP1010 to ensure the number of axes includes your rotary axes in the total count.

  3. 3

    Verify kinematics parameters MP7500 series

Check MP7500 (KinematicsOpt) for proper kinematics type selection. Verify MP7502 and MP7503 define rotary axis positions and orientations in the kinematic chain. For swivel head machines, check MP7510 (type of rotary axes).

Use the built-in kinematics configuration assistant on TNC 640: Settings > Kinematics Config to validate your setup graphically.

  4. 4

Configure axis assignment in MP100 series

Ensure MP100-109 (axis assignments) map rotary axes to physical drive channels. Each rotary axis needs a dedicated channel assignment.

After changing axis configuration parameters, a control reboot is required for changes to take effect.

  5. 5

    Test rotary axis movement

After configuration, switch to Manual operation mode and test rotary axis movement using the axis direction keys. Verify each rotary axis responds correctly and displays position feedback.

Test with reduced feedrate override and ensure tooling and fixtures are clear of collision hazards.

Call a technician if:

  • ·Software options missing or expired
  • ·Kinematic parameters require machine-specific calibration
  • ·Hardware encoder or motor issues suspected

Prevention

  • Regularly backup machine parameters before modifications
  • Document kinematic configuration changes
  • Verify software options before planning 5-axis operations
  • Test orientation functions after any parameter changes

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing linear and rotary axis parameter settings
  • Incorrect kinematic model selection
  • Forgetting to enable rotary axes after parameter changes
  • Using orientation commands without proper software options
