HEIDENHAIN 1A1-004E - Distance is too short to accelerate non-interpolating axis!
The non-interpolating axis cannot physically achieve the commanded velocity within the available travel distance given its acceleration limits. This is fundamentally a motion profile calculation failure where distance < (v²/2a) for the acceleration and deceleration phases. The Heidenhain control detects this impossibility before motion starts and prevents the move.
HEIDENHAIN 1A1-004E - Distance is too short to accelerate non-interpolating axis!
Distance is too short to accelerate non-interpolating axis!
This TNC7/TNC 640 error (1A1-004E) relates to 'Distance is too short to accelerate non-interpolating axis!'. A non-interpolating axis is exceeding the maximum accelera- tion!
Root Cause Summary
The non-interpolating axis cannot physically achieve the commanded velocity within the available travel distance given its acceleration limits. This is fundamentally a motion profile calculation failure where distance < (v²/2a) for the acceleration and deceleration phases. The Heidenhain control detects this impossibility before motion starts and prevents the move.
Safety
Causes and Fixes
Identify affected axis and move distance
Press ERROR key, note the NC block number. Open the program in EDIT mode and examine the positioning command. Identify which axis (typically U, V, W, or rotary axis) and calculate the actual travel distance from current position to target.
Use POS key to display current axis positions, then compare to programmed target position to verify actual travel distance.
Check axis acceleration parameters
Access MOD menu, select Machine Parameters, navigate to MP1810.x (where x is the axis number). Note the acceleration value in m/s² or mm/s². Also check MP1800.x for maximum velocity.
Minimum distance required ≈ (FMAX²)/(1000 × MP1810). For example, FMAX=5000 mm/min with MP1810=2 m/s² requires minimum ~58mm travel.
Reduce feedrate for positioning move
Modify the NC block with FMAX command before the positioning move. For example: 'L X+100 Y+50 U+5 FMAX M91' - reduce the FMAX value or add explicit F word with lower feedrate suitable for short distance.
For auxiliary axes, use separate positioning blocks with reduced feedrate: 'L U+5 F1000 M91' followed by 'L X+100 Y+50 FMAX' to decouple axis dynamics.
Increase travel distance or split move
If geometrically possible, increase the positioning distance. Alternatively, insert intermediate positioning point: instead of 'L U+2', use 'L U+1' then 'L U+1' to give more distance for acceleration profile.
Verify that intermediate positions do not cause collision or violate working envelope limits.
