HEIDENHAIN 1A1-0052 - Tool inclination cannot be calculated

Tool inclination cannot be calculated

The control could not compute the tool inclination angle because the number of configured rotary axes is wrong for the chosen calculation. Either too many or too few rotaries are present.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm indicates the TNC cannot derive a valid normalized tool orientation vector from the programmed parameters, which is essential for 5-axis TCPM operations. The mathematical calculation fails when vector components create a zero-length or undefined direction, or when the resulting orientation exceeds the kinematic limits of the machine's rotary axes.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Inspect PLANE SPATIAL definition

Open the NC program and locate the PLANE SPATIAL command. Check that the spatial position vector (SPA, SPB, SPC) or direction vector components are non-zero and properly formatted. Example: PLANE SPATIAL SPA+0 SPB+0 SPC+0 would be invalid.

Use PLANE RESET before defining a new PLANE SPATIAL to clear any residual orientation data that might conflict with new calculations.

  2. 2

    Verify vector length parameter

If using vector notation (X, Y, Z, L format), ensure the L parameter is explicitly defined and greater than zero. In Test Run mode (MOD > Program Run > Operating Mode), check the active plane display to confirm vector calculation.

The TNC normalizes vectors internally, but L=0 or undefined causes immediate calculation failure before normalization occurs.

  3. 3

    Test with known-good vector

In MDI, enter: PLANE SPATIAL SPA+0 SPB+0 SPC+1 DIST+100 and execute. If this works, the issue is in your program's vector definition. If it fails, check kinematic configuration.

Ensure rotary axes are in safe position before testing PLANE commands to avoid unexpected axis movements.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Hardware encoder failures
  • ·Kinematic calibration required
  • ·Software license issues
  • ·Parameter corruption requiring factory reset

Prevention

  • Regular backup of machine parameters
  • Periodic kinematic accuracy verification
  • Monitor software option expiration dates
  • Maintain clean encoder connections

Common Mistakes

  • Changing axis assignments without updating kinematic parameters
  • Disabling rotary axes without considering 5-axis programs
  • Ignoring encoder signal quality degradation
  • Mixing parameter sets from different machine configurations
