Heidenhain 1C7-0206 - Maximum path with SS2 reaction

Maximum path with SS2 reaction

This alarm occurs when the machine's Safe Stop 2 (SS2) function is triggered but the stopping distance exceeds the maximum permitted path defined in the safety configuration. SS2 is a monitored safe stop (STO preceded by controlled deceleration) and this alarm indicates the machine did not stop within the safety-configured distance parameters, violating functional safety requirements per ISO 13849.

Root Cause Summary

The SS2 safe stop function is active but the machine cannot decelerate and stop within the safety-configured maximum stopping distance. This is fundamentally a mismatch between the safety configuration parameters (expected stopping distance) and the actual machine dynamics (achievable stopping distance), which must be resolved to maintain functional safety certification.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Access safety parameters

Enter machine parameter mode: Switch key to position 1, press MOD key, enter password if required. Navigate to safety parameters: enter MP7686 in the search field to access SS2_MAX_STOPPING_DIST for each axis

Modifying safety parameters requires proper authorization and may invalidate safety certification. Document all changes and coordinate with safety engineer.

  2. 2

    Review safety event log

Press MOD key, select 'Functional Safety', then 'Safety Event Log'. Identify which axis (X, Y, Z, etc.) triggered alarm 1C7-0206 and note the actual stopping distance recorded

The event log shows timestamp, axis, and actual distance traveled during SS2. Compare this to MP7686.x to see the margin of violation.

  3. 3

    Measure actual stopping distance

Use Test Run mode with reduced override. Trigger SS2 manually via safety input while monitoring with DataPilot (record axis actual position values). Repeat 3 times to establish consistent stopping distance with normal loads

Ensure safe machine environment with no workpiece or tooling that could be damaged during emergency stop testing.

  4. 4

    Adjust MP7686.x if necessary

If measured stopping distances are consistently below the safety-required limit but exceed current MP7686.x setting, increase the parameter value appropriately. Add 20% safety margin to measured maximum distance. Requires safety validation and risk assessment documentation

Typical stopping distances: lightweight axes 10-50mm, heavy gantry axes 100-300mm. Consult machine safety documentation for validated values.

Service Recommendedmedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Safety parameter modifications required
  • ·Brake system hardware issues
  • ·Drive system faults
  • ·Safety software updates needed

Prevention

  • Regular brake system maintenance and testing
  • Periodic SS2 function validation
  • Monitor spindle deceleration performance trends
  • Keep safety software updated

Common Mistakes

  • Adjusting safety parameters without proper validation
  • Ignoring brake wear indicators
  • Inadequate SS2 testing frequency
  • Modifying drive parameters without considering safety implications
