HEIDENHAIN 1A0-0089 - Illegal base transformation

Illegal base transformation

This TNC7/TNC 640 error (1A0-0089) relates to 'Illegal base transformation'. The base information applies to a nonexistent axis.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm indicates the TNC control cannot calculate a valid coordinate transformation matrix based on the supplied base transformation parameters. The root cause is typically conflicting transformation definitions, invalid spatial angle combinations, or parameters that create a mathematically undefined kinematic state. Heidenhain controls strictly validate transformation geometry before activation to prevent kinematic calculation errors during machining.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Access preset table

Press MOD key, select 'Preset table' from the menu, or access via 'Tables' softkey then 'Preset table'. Review all entries for the active preset number being called by your program.

The active preset is shown in the position display - check which row number is highlighted in yellow or has an active marker.

  2. 2

    Check spatial angle values

Review SPA (spatial A), SPB (spatial B), and SPC (spatial C) columns. Look for SPB values approaching ±90° or unusual combinations like SPA=45°, SPB=90°, SPC=45° which can create undefined transformation states.

Do not modify preset values while a program is running or a transformation is active - always reset first.

  3. 3

    Test with simplified transformation

Temporarily set all spatial angles to 0.0 and test if the base transformation activates. If successful, incrementally add back one rotation axis at a time to identify the problematic combination.

For most 3+2 operations, use only SPB and SPC (or machine-specific rotary angles) - avoid triple rotation unless absolutely required.

  4. 4

    Verify against machine kinematics

Access MOD > Machine Parameters > Kinematics and verify the defined machine structure (CfgAxisSeq, CfgRotAxes). The base transformation must align with the machine's physical rotary axis configuration.

On 5-axis machines, the transformation sequence matters - swivel head machines use different kinematics than table rotary machines.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Kinematic parameter corruption requiring machine builder input
  • ·Hardware encoder/drive failures
  • ·Software licensing issues

Prevention

  • Always backup machine parameters before modifications
  • Validate PLANE functions in simulation before machine execution
  • Regularly check software option expiration dates
  • Document all kinematic parameter changes

Common Mistakes

  • Using axis letters that don't match MP7500 configuration
  • Forgetting PLANE RESET after program errors
  • Modifying kinematic parameters without understanding machine geometry
  • Assuming all TNC controls have identical axis configurations
