HEIDENHAIN 140-002D - Maximum list size exceeded

Maximum list size exceeded

The maximum list size for configuration data objects has been reached. No more objects can be added without removing existing ones.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm is triggered by memory management protection within the TNC control when internal data structures exceed their maximum defined capacity. The control enforces strict limits on table sizes, arrays, and lists based on the specific control model and configuration. Exceeding these limits indicates either NC programming errors accessing beyond array bounds, excessive data accumulation in system tables, or occasionally corrupted system files causing incorrect size reporting.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check tool table size

Press MOD key, select 'SYSTEM FILES', navigate to TNC:\table\TOOL.T and check the number of tool entries. Compare against your control's specifications (typically 254-32767 depending on model).

Use PGM MGT file manager to view TOOL.T properties - file size and number of lines indicate total tool entries.

  2. 2

    Audit and consolidate tools

Review TOOL.T for duplicate entries, obsolete tools, or placeholder entries. Delete unused tools using the table editor or export, clean, and re-import the file.

Always backup TOOL.T to USB before editing. Document which tools are removed to avoid program errors referencing deleted tool numbers.

  3. 3

    Verify tool call methodology

Check if NC programs use TOOL CALL with proper tool number references. Ensure programs aren't inadvertently creating tool entries through automatic tool measurement cycles.

Use 'Test Run' mode with tool table display active to observe which tools are being called during program execution.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter modifications cause machine malfunction
  • ·Encoder position loss occurs
  • ·Software upgrade is required

Prevention

  • Regularly audit and clean unused parameter sets
  • Document all parameter changes
  • Use standardized configurations across similar axes

Common Mistakes

  • Deleting active axis parameters
  • Not backing up parameters before changes
  • Ignoring software version compatibility
