HEIDENHAIN 140-0017 - Machine parameters were changed. Shut down the control and restart.

Machine parameters were changed. Shut down the control and restart.

Configuration files have been modified in a way that requires a full control restart to take effect. Changes will not be active until the system is rebooted.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm is triggered by Heidenhain's parameter management system when changes to specific machine configuration parameters require a full control reinitialization. The TNC architecture requires certain parameter changes to be loaded during the boot sequence to ensure proper hardware communication, axis mapping, and drive synchronization. A controlled shutdown/restart ensures these changes are properly integrated into the control's runtime environment.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Verify Parameter Changes

Press MOD key > Machine Parameters > navigate to the CfgAxisSequence or CfgChanAxisSequ tables to confirm which parameters were modified. Note the axis numbers and sequence changes.

Use the search function in machine parameters (softkey 'Find') to quickly locate recently modified parameters - they may show different color highlighting on some control versions.

  2. 2

    Prepare for Controlled Shutdown

Return all axes to a safe reference position if possible. Document current work offsets and tool data if critical. Ensure no NC program is actively running.

Never use emergency stop or main power switch for this restart - it may corrupt parameter settings or cause improper initialization.

  3. 3

    Execute Proper Shutdown

Press MOD key > select 'Shut Down' softkey. Wait for the control to display shutdown complete message or screen goes blank. On iTNC/TNC 640, wait for the 'System can be switched off' message.

On TNC 620/640 controls, the shutdown process includes automatic parameter validation - watch for any error messages during this phase.

  4. 4

    Restart and Verify

After 10-15 seconds, power on the control. Allow complete boot sequence. After startup, return to MOD > Machine Parameters and verify the axis configuration parameters show the intended values.

Check the logfile.txt in TNC:system folder for any boot-time parameter loading errors if axis behavior seems incorrect after restart.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter values are unknown or undocumented
  • ·Hardware initialization fails after restart
  • ·Servo instability occurs after parameter changes
  • ·PLC compilation errors persist

Prevention

  • Always document parameter changes before modification
  • Create parameter backups before making changes
  • Follow proper shutdown procedures when modifying machine parameters
  • Verify parameter compatibility with current software version

Common Mistakes

  • Restarting without proper shutdown sequence
  • Not documenting original parameter values
  • Ignoring hardware connection verification
  • Rushing axis initialization after parameter changes
