HAAS Alarm 86 - Encoder Feedback Signal Lost

Encoder Feedback Signal Lost Detected

This alarm indicates the MOCON board has lost encoder feedback signal from one or more axis servo motors during motion. The encoder provides position and velocity feedback to close the servo loop, and loss of this signal means the control cannot verify actual motor position. The machine will stop immediately to prevent potential crash or runaway axis condition.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 86 fires when the NGC control loses position feedback from axis or spindle encoders, typically due to damaged encoder cables, loose connections, or encoder failure. The servo amplifier cannot maintain proper position control without valid encoder feedback signals, causing immediate axis shutdown for safety.

Safety

  • Do not operate machine with axis servo feedback disabled as positioning errors may cause collisions
  • Ensure spindle is stopped and cool before accessing encoder mounted on spindle head
  • Turn off main power before performing encoder cable maintenance to prevent shock hazard

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Power Down and Inspect Cables

Turn off machine power and visually inspect all encoder cables for cuts, pinch points, or wear damage along the cable track.

Always power down before inspecting cables to prevent electrical shock

  2. 2

    Check Encoder Connections

Verify encoder connector is fully seated at both the motor/encoder end and the servo amplifier connection. Look for bent pins or corrosion.

Use dielectric grease on encoder connections in harsh environments

  3. 3

    Test Cable Continuity

Using a multimeter, check continuity of encoder cable conductors from motor end to amplifier end to identify broken wires.

Encoder cables typically have 5-15 conductors depending on encoder type

  4. 4

    Replace Damaged Cable

If damage is found, replace the encoder cable with genuine Haas part number and route carefully to avoid future damage.

Always use proper cable clamps and avoid sharp bends in encoder cables
