HAAS Alarm 89 - Spindle Speed Feedback Limit Exceeded

Spindle Speed Feedback Limit Exceeded

This alarm triggers when the difference between commanded spindle speed and actual spindle speed feedback exceeds the allowable tolerance window programmed in the control. The MOCON compares the programmed RPM command with encoder feedback from the spindle motor and faults when the error remains too large for too long. This protects against runaway spindle conditions and ensures accurate spindle speed for threading and rigid tapping operations.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 89 fires when the spindle encoder feedback indicates actual RPM exceeds the programmed speed limit or electrical hardware limits defined in parameters 71-74. This safety alarm prevents spindle runaway conditions that could damage the machine or tooling.

Safety

  • Never approach rotating spindle during speed feedback diagnostics as injury hazard is extreme
  • Do not attempt to manually slow spindle rotation to test feedback as breakage may result
  • Ensure all spindle guards are secure before running any spindle test cycles

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Encoder Signal Quality

Access DIAGNOSTICS > SPINDLE and monitor encoder A/B phase signals during spindle rotation. Look for signal dropouts or irregular patterns.

Clean signals should show consistent square waves with 90-degree phase relationship

  2. 2

    Inspect Encoder Assembly

Remove spindle encoder cover and check for coolant contamination, damaged cables, or loose connections on encoder feedback connector.

Power down machine and lock out electrical before removing encoder covers

  3. 3

    Verify Parameter 72 Setting

Check SETTING > PARAMETERS > 72 (Spindle Encoder Lines) matches encoder specification. Incorrect value causes speed calculation errors.

Most Haas spindle encoders use 1024 lines - verify against machine specifications

  4. 4

    Test Encoder Replacement

If signals are degraded, replace spindle encoder assembly and recalibrate using DIAGNOSTICS > SPINDLE > ENCODER TEST function.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Drive amplifier replacement required
  • ·Spindle encoder signals completely absent
  • ·Multiple simultaneous drive faults present

Prevention

  • Monitor spindle encoder signals monthly
  • Maintain proper belt tension per schedule
  • Keep encoder area clean and dry
  • Verify parameter settings after any control updates

Common Mistakes

  • Setting Parameter 71 too high for spindle rating
  • Ignoring belt wear indicators
  • Not checking speed override settings
  • Assuming encoder problems are always mechanical
