HAAS Alarm 88 - Axis Servo Overload Detected

Axis Servo Overload Condition Detected

This alarm occurs when a servo amplifier detects sustained high current demand on an axis motor, indicating the motor is working beyond its thermal or current rating. The servo amp continuously monitors motor current and will fault when the integrated current-time threshold is exceeded to protect the motor windings and amplifier output stage. The affected axis and machine motion halt immediately.

Root Cause Summary

Haas Alarm 88 occurs when the servo amplifier detects excessive current draw from an axis motor, typically exceeding the programmed current limit in parameter 70 (Servo Current Limit). The NGC control monitors servo current through the amplifier feedback and triggers this alarm to protect the servo drive from thermal damage or component failure.

Safety

  • Do not manually force servo axis beyond normal travel range as motor and coupling damage may result
  • Ensure workpiece is secure before resuming axis motion to prevent projectile ejection
  • Keep hands clear of servo axis movement paths during troubleshooting tests

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Emergency Stop and Visual Inspection

Press E-STOP and visually inspect the affected axis for obvious obstructions, crashed tooling, or workpiece interference.

Ensure all motion has stopped before approaching the machine

  2. 2

    Manual Axis Movement Test

Use HANDLE JOG mode to manually move the axis at slow feed rates (10-50 IPM) to identify binding points or resistance.

Listen for unusual grinding or scraping sounds during manual movement

  3. 3

    Check Way Lubrication

Verify way oil level and operation through DIAGNOSTICS > WAY LUBE menu, ensure proper lubrication flow to axis ways.

Low way oil can cause increased friction and servo overload conditions

  4. 4

    Inspect Ball Screw and Coupling

Check ball screw for damage, debris, or coupling misalignment that could cause mechanical binding during axis movement.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Motor winding resistance imbalance >10%
  • ·Amplifier showing multiple fault codes
  • ·Servo tuning parameters require factory reset
  • ·Mechanical binding cannot be identified

Prevention

  • Regular way lubrication maintenance
  • Monitor servo load percentages during programming
  • Maintain proper cutting tool condition
  • Perform periodic servo parameter backup

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring gradual increase in servo load before alarm
  • Adjusting current limits without addressing root cause
  • Continuing operation after intermittent alarms
  • Not checking mechanical condition before electrical troubleshooting
