HAAS Alarm 85 - Lubrication System Pump Failure

Lubrication System Pump Failure

This alarm is generated when the automatic lubrication system pump fails to operate or the system does not detect proper lubrication delivery to machine ways and ballscrews. The MOCON monitors the lube pump cycle counter and pressure or flow sensor to verify lubrication is being dispensed at programmed intervals. Machine will typically allow a limited number of axis moves before halting operation to prevent damage to unlubricated sliding surfaces and ballscrew assemblies.

Root Cause Summary

Haas Alarm 85 fires when the automatic lubrication system fails to maintain proper oil pressure or flow to critical machine components. The NGC control monitors lubrication pump operation through pressure switches and flow sensors, triggering this alarm when system parameters fall below acceptable thresholds.

Safety

  • Do not operate machine without active lubrication as component seizure may cause sudden stops
  • Avoid skin contact with heated lubrication oil which may cause burns
  • Ensure lubrication pump is de-energized before servicing oil lines or pump connections

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Oil Level Visually

Open electrical cabinet and locate the clear oil reservoir tank. Oil level should be between MIN and MAX marks on the sight gauge.

Ensure machine power is locked out before opening electrical cabinet

  2. 2

    Refill with Correct Lubricant

Add Haas-approved Way Oil (typically ISO 68) through the fill port until oil reaches the MAX line. Use only recommended lubricant specified in machine manual.

Keep spare oil on hand and check levels during daily maintenance routine

  3. 3

    Prime Lubrication System

Access SETTING 84 (Lube Timer) and manually activate pump using MDI mode M08 command to prime system and verify oil flow to all lubrication points.

  4. 4

    Reset Alarm and Test

Press RESET and cycle machine power. Monitor for alarm recurrence during next automatic lubrication cycle.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Control input circuit failure suspected
  • ·Pump motor replacement required
  • ·Multiple system components failing simultaneously

Prevention

  • Check oil level weekly during preventive maintenance
  • Replace lubrication oil annually or per machine hours
  • Keep spare pump motor and pressure switch in inventory
  • Clean lubrication fittings monthly to prevent blockages

Common Mistakes

  • Using incorrect oil viscosity grade
  • Overfilling reservoir causing pump cavitation
  • Ignoring early signs of pump wear like noise or vibration
  • Failing to prime system after oil changes
