Haas 340 - CUTTER COMP BEGIN WITH G02 OR G03 | Haas CNC Alarm

CUTTER COMP BEGIN WITH G02 OR G03

This alarm occurs when the control detects a cutter compensation G41 or G42 command is being initiated with a circular motion command (G02 or G03) instead of a linear move. The Haas control requires cutter compensation to begin with a G00 or G01 move to establish the offset direction properly. This is a program error that prevents the control from calculating the correct tool path geometry.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 340 fires when the rotary axis clamp system fails to engage or disengage properly, or when the clamp position feedback signals are inconsistent. This alarm protects against potential workpiece movement during machining operations on 4th or 5th axis rotary tables.

Safety

  • Verify axis is clamped before machining
  • ⚠️ CRITICAL: Verify axis is properly clamped before starting any machining operations
  • Disconnect power to the machine before working on electrical components to avoid electrical shock.
  • Relieve air pressure from the system before disconnecting air lines to prevent injury from pressurized air.
  • Use caution when manually actuating the clamp mechanism to avoid pinching or crushing hazards.
  • Support the rotary table or workpiece before releasing the clamp if there is a risk of uncontrolled movement due to gravity or unbalanced load.
  • Ensure machine is powered off and locked out before performing inspections

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Air Pressure

Verify shop air pressure is 80-100 PSI at the machine. Check pressure gauge on rotary table if equipped.

Ensure E-stop is engaged before checking pneumatic connections

  2. 2

    Test Solenoid Operation

From CURRENT COMMANDS screen, manually activate M10/M11 clamp commands and listen for solenoid clicking sound.

A healthy solenoid makes a distinct clicking sound when energized

  3. 3

    Inspect Air Lines

Check pneumatic lines to rotary table for kinks, leaks, or disconnections. Verify fittings are tight.

Use lockout/tagout procedures before disconnecting air lines

  4. 4

    Replace Solenoid Valve

If solenoid is not operating, replace the clamp solenoid valve assembly following manufacturer specifications.

Mark wire positions before disconnecting to ensure proper reconnection

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·I/O module replacement required
  • ·Rotary table disassembly needed
  • ·Electrical troubleshooting beyond basic checks

Prevention

  • Regular clamp mechanism cleaning and lubrication
  • Maintain proper shop air pressure and filtration
  • Inspect clamp position switches during PM intervals
  • Keep rotary table area clear of chips and debris

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring air pressure requirements
  • Using incorrect lubricants on clamp mechanism
  • Forcing clamp operation when binding occurs
  • Replacing switches without checking alignment
