HAAS Alarm 35 - Spindle Bearing Overheat

Spindle bearing temperature exceeds maximum limit

This alarm indicates that the thermistor sensor monitoring the front or rear spindle bearing has detected a temperature exceeding the maximum allowable limit set in the control parameters. The spindle drive on the MOCON board receives this temperature data and triggers the alarm to prevent bearing seizure or catastrophic spindle damage. Machine motion and spindle rotation are halted immediately to protect the spindle assembly.

Root Cause Summary

Haas Alarm 35 triggers when the spindle bearing temperature sensor detects heat above the programmed threshold, typically set in Parameter 271 (SPINDLE TEMP LIMIT). The NGC control monitors thermistor readings continuously and immediately stops spindle operation to prevent bearing seizure and catastrophic spindle damage.

Safety

  • Do not touch the spindle while it is hot; severe burns can result from contact with hot metal
  • Do not attempt to restart the spindle immediately after alarm; allow sufficient cooling time
  • Ensure spindle is completely stopped and cooled before accessing the spindle area

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check spindle oil level and condition

Navigate to CURRENT COMMANDS > SPINDLE and verify oil level sight glass. Check Parameter 272 (SPINDLE OIL TIMER) for lubrication cycle timing.

Never check oil level with spindle running

  2. 2

    Verify automatic lubrication operation

In MDI mode, execute M33 (spindle oil on) and M34 (spindle oil off) commands to test lubrication pump operation and flow.

Listen for pump motor operation and observe oil flow at spindle head

  3. 3

    Inspect oil lines and fittings

Check all oil lines from reservoir to spindle head for leaks, kinks, or blockages. Verify oil filter condition if equipped.

Replace oil and filter if contaminated or if last change exceeds 2000 hours

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Spindle bearing replacement required
  • ·Temperature sensor replacement needed
  • ·Spindle rebuild necessary

Prevention

  • Maintain proper lubrication schedule per Parameter 272
  • Monitor coolant temperature and flow regularly
  • Avoid excessive cutting loads and dull tooling
  • Perform regular spindle runout checks

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring early temperature warnings
  • Operating with low oil level
  • Using incorrect spindle oil viscosity
  • Failing to balance cutting tools properly
