Haas Alarm 160 - Servo Following Error Exceeded

Servo Error Too Large

This alarm occurs when the control detects excessive following error between commanded axis position and actual encoder feedback position on any servo axis. The MOCON continuously monitors the difference between where the axis should be versus where the encoder reports it actually is, and triggers this fault when that error exceeds the allowable threshold defined in Parameter 93. Machine motion will stop immediately to prevent damage or scrapping parts.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 160 occurs when the servo following error exceeds the tolerance set in Parameter 29 (Following Error Limit). The NGC control detects that the commanded position from the trajectory planner differs from the actual encoder feedback position by more than the allowable window, indicating the servo system cannot maintain proper tracking.

Safety

  • Position accuracy compromised

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Axis Movement

Put machine in HANDLE JOG mode and manually move the affected axis at slow speeds to feel for binding or rough spots.

Ensure all safety interlocks are active before manual movement

  2. 2

    Inspect Way Covers and Bellows

Remove way covers and inspect for chip buildup, coolant residue, or damaged bellows that may be interfering with axis travel.

Look for shiny wear marks on ways that indicate contact points

  3. 3

    Check Ball Screw and Nut

Inspect ball screw for damage, contamination, or loss of lubrication. Listen for unusual noise during slow jogging movements.

A dry ball screw will often make a squeaking or grinding sound

  4. 4

    Verify Gibs and Preload

Check gib adjustments for proper preload - too tight causes binding, too loose causes chatter and following errors during direction changes.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Servo drive module failure
  • ·Ball screw replacement needed
  • ·Complex electrical troubleshooting

Prevention

  • Regular way lubrication per maintenance schedule
  • Keep chips and coolant away from encoder areas
  • Monitor servo load percentages during routine operation
  • Maintain proper gib adjustments

Common Mistakes

  • Increasing Parameter 29 without addressing root cause
  • Ignoring mechanical binding issues
  • Not checking encoder cable routing
  • Assuming all axes have same parameter requirements
