Haas 161 - X AXIS DRIVE FAULT | Haas CNC Alarm

X AXIS DRIVE FAULT

This alarm indicates the X-axis servo amplifier has detected an internal fault condition and has communicated that fault status back to the MOCON board via the amplifier status lines. The servo amp has shut down output to the X-axis motor to protect itself and the motor from damage. The machine will not allow any motion commands until the fault condition is cleared and the alarm is reset.

Safety

  • Part accuracy affected

Common Causes

  • Overvoltage or undervoltage condition on the DC bus feeding the X-axis servo amplifier from the PSUP
  • Shorted motor phase wiring between the servo amplifier output and the X-axis servo motor terminals
  • Internal thermal overload in the servo amplifier due to excessive current draw or inadequate cooling airflow
  • Encoder feedback fault caused by damaged encoder cable, failed encoder, or electrical noise on feedback lines
  • Failed power components inside the servo amplifier such as IGBT output transistors or gate driver circuits

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Check the servo amplifier LED diagnostic indicators on the X-axis amp for specific fault code display
  2. 2Measure DC bus voltage at the servo amplifier input terminals, verify approximately 300-325VDC present with machine powered on
  3. 3Inspect X-axis motor power cable for physical damage, proper connection, and check for shorted phases using ohmmeter with power off
  4. 4Disconnect X-axis encoder cable at servo amp and motor, inspect for damaged pins, then verify encoder resistance values per service manual specifications
  5. 5Clear the alarm and attempt to jog X-axis at low feedrate while monitoring servo amp for fault recurrence and motor for abnormal noise or heat
  6. 6Swap X-axis servo amplifier with another axis amplifier of same type to determine if fault follows the amplifier or stays with the axis circuit
