Haas 162 - Y AXIS DRIVE FAULT | Haas CNC Alarm
Alarm 162 Y Servo Error occurs when the Y-axis servo amplifier detects an internal fault and shuts down protectively. The NGC control monitors drive status through the serial encoder communication and triggers this alarm when the amplifier reports overcurrent, overvoltage, overtemperature, or encoder feedback faults.
Haas 162 - Y AXIS DRIVE FAULT | Haas CNC Alarm
Y AXIS DRIVE FAULT
This alarm indicates the Y-axis servo amplifier has detected an internal fault condition and has communicated that fault status back to the MOCON board via the amplifier status lines. The servo amp has shut down output to the Y-axis motor to protect itself and the motor from damage. The machine will not allow any motion commands until the fault condition is cleared and the alarm is reset.
Root Cause Summary
Alarm 162 Y Servo Error occurs when the Y-axis servo amplifier detects an internal fault and shuts down protectively. The NGC control monitors drive status through the serial encoder communication and triggers this alarm when the amplifier reports overcurrent, overvoltage, overtemperature, or encoder feedback faults.
Safety
Causes and Fixes
Check Y-axis mechanical movement
With machine powered off, manually move Y-axis through full travel range. Feel for binding, rough spots, or excessive resistance.
Ensure E-stop is engaged and main power is OFF before manual movement
Inspect Y-axis way lubrication
Check way oil level and distribution. Verify automatic lubrication system operation through CURRENT COMMANDS > AUX FUNCTIONS > M08 (coolant/lube on).
Low way oil is the most common cause of servo overload on Haas machines
Examine ballscrew and nut condition
Look for chips, debris, or damage in ballscrew grooves. Check ballnut backlash by observing any play during direction changes.
Excessive ballscrew wear shows as inconsistent following error in DIAGNOSTICS > POSITION
Verify Y-axis load parameters
Check Setting 71 (Y-axis maximum velocity) and Setting 72 (Y-axis acceleration) are within motor specifications for your machine model.
