Haas Alarm 170 - Coolant Pump or System Fault

Coolant System Fault

This alarm triggers when the MOCON board detects that the coolant pump motor contactor or relay has failed to energize, or the coolant flow/pressure sensor indicates insufficient flow. The machine expects confirmation that coolant is flowing within a set time after the M08 command is issued. This fault prevents automatic operation to protect tooling and workpiece from running dry.

Root Cause Summary

Haas Alarm 170 Coolant System Fault typically fires when the coolant flow switch detects insufficient flow, coolant level is too low, or the coolant pump has failed. The NGC control monitors coolant system parameters through dedicated inputs and will trigger this alarm to prevent spindle and cutting tool damage from inadequate cooling.

Safety

  • Tools may overheat without coolant
  • Workpiece quality affected
  • Workpiece quality may be affected by insufficient coolant, resulting in poor surface finish or dimensional inaccuracies.
  • Ensure the machine is powered off and locked out before performing any electrical troubleshooting.
  • Be careful when working with coolant, as some types can be irritating to the skin or eyes. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • High-pressure coolant can cause injury. Relieve pressure before disconnecting any coolant lines.
  • Electrical shock hazard exists when working with electrical components. Use caution and follow proper safety procedures.
  • Moving parts of the coolant pump can cause injury. Ensure the pump is de-energized before performing any maintenance.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Physical Coolant Level

Visually inspect the coolant tank level. Tank should be filled to the marked level line, typically 3/4 full.

Ensure machine is powered off before opening coolant tank access panels.

  2. 2

    Verify Level Sensor Operation

Navigate to CURRENT COMMANDS > DIAGNOSTICS > INPUTS and check the coolant level input status. Input should show ON when tank is full.

Clean the level sensor probe with a wire brush if readings are inconsistent.

  3. 3

    Refill and Test System

Add appropriate coolant mixture to proper level, then press COOLANT button on control panel to test system operation.

Use only Haas-approved coolant concentrate mixed at 5-10% ratio with water.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Pump motor replacement required
  • ·Electrical troubleshooting beyond basic checks
  • ·Flow switch replacement needed

Prevention

  • Check coolant level daily
  • Clean coolant filter weekly
  • Use proper coolant concentration
  • Monitor for biological growth in coolant

Common Mistakes

  • Running machine with low coolant
  • Using incorrect coolant mixture
  • Ignoring early flow warning signs
  • Not cleaning filters regularly
