Haas 175 - GROUND FAULT DETECTED | Haas CNC Alarm

GROUND FAULT DETECTED

Ground Fault Detected alarm indicates the PSUP (Power Supply Unit) or spindle drive has sensed leakage current to ground exceeding safe thresholds, typically 30 milliamps or more. This is a critical safety alarm that immediately shuts down the machine to prevent electrical shock hazard or equipment damage. The fault is usually detected by a ground fault interrupter circuit in the main power distribution.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 175 fires when the machine completes a G31 probing move without detecting the expected probe input signal change on Input #38 or #39. This indicates the probe either failed to make contact, the probe signal isn't reaching the control, or the probe hardware has malfunctioned.

Safety

  • Always manually trigger the probe and verify the diagnostics input toggles before running any probing cycle to prevent probe crash if receiver or battery has failed
  • Use only dry compressed air when cleaning optical receiver lens—never use solvents or wet cloths that can leave residue and worsen signal detection
  • When testing wired probe cables with machine powered, do not disconnect or reconnect probe connectors under power as voltage spikes can damage receiver module input circuitry

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Probe Input Status

Go to CURRENT COMMANDS > DIAGNOSTICS and verify Input #38 (or #39 for wireless) changes state when probe tip is manually touched to grounded surface.

Use a metal tool to bridge probe tip to spindle housing for reliable test contact

  2. 2

    Inspect Probe Connections

Check probe cable connections at both the probe and the machine interface. Look for loose M8 connectors, damaged cables, or corrosion at connection points.

Power down spindle before disconnecting probe cables to avoid damage

  3. 3

    Verify Probe Parameter Settings

Check Parameter 31 (PROBE INPUT) is set correctly - typically 38 for wired probes or 39 for wireless systems like Renishaw radio probes.

Parameter 31 must match the actual input being used or probe signals will be ignored

  4. 4

    Test Probe Continuity

Use multimeter to verify continuity through probe cable and stylus assembly. Resistance should be less than 10 ohms from tip to signal pin.

Remove probe from spindle before electrical testing to prevent accidental machine movement

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Input circuit hardware failure suspected
  • ·Probe requires calibration or replacement
  • ·Electrical cabinet work needed

Prevention

  • Regular probe stylus inspection and replacement
  • Proper G31 feedrate programming
  • Routine probe cable and connection maintenance
  • Verify probe input status before each probing cycle

Common Mistakes

  • Using excessive G31 feedrates
  • Forgetting tool length compensation before probing
  • Incorrect Parameter 31 probe input setting
  • Not checking probe battery level on wireless systems
