Haas 158 - VIDEO/KEYBOARD PCB FAILURE | Haas CNC Alarm

VIDEO/KEYBOARD PCB FAILURE

This alarm indicates the MOCON board has detected a failure in the video/keyboard interface circuitry or communication pathway. The control cannot properly communicate with the display panel or receive keyboard input, which prevents operator interaction with the machine. This is a MOCON-level hardware fault that will halt machine operation until resolved.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 158 fires when the spindle motor's PTC thermistor circuit signals an overtemperature condition to the NGC control, triggering immediate spindle shutdown. This can result from actual thermal overload due to cooling system failure, excessive cutting loads, or electrical faults in the thermistor monitoring circuit.

Safety

  • Spindle head will be hot - do not touch
  • Repeated overheating damages bearings
  • May indicate pending spindle failure
  • ⚠️ CAUTION: Spindle head will be extremely hot - do not touch
  • ⚠️ WARNING: Repeated overheating causes permanent bearing damage
  • ⚠️ ALERT: May indicate impending spindle failure requiring service
  • Disconnect power to the machine before performing any maintenance or repairs on the spindle or cooling system. Lockout/Tagout procedures must be followed.
  • Be careful when handling coolant. Some coolants may be irritants or contain harmful chemicals. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ensure proper grounding of the spindle motor and drive to prevent electrical shock.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Spindle Cooling Fan Operation

Verify the spindle motor cooling fan is running when spindle is active. Check fan blades for damage and clear any debris blocking airflow.

Ensure spindle is stopped and locked out before inspecting fan assembly

  2. 2

    Inspect Coolant Flow (if equipped)

For liquid-cooled spindles, verify coolant flow through spindle motor jacket. Check coolant level, pump operation, and lines for blockages.

Feel the spindle motor housing - it should be warm but not too hot to touch after normal operation

  3. 3

    Clean Heat Exchanger Surfaces

Remove accumulated chips, coolant residue, and debris from spindle motor cooling fins and heat exchanger surfaces using compressed air.

Use proper PPE when using compressed air - maximum 30 PSI for cleaning

  4. 4

    Monitor Spindle Temperature Recovery

Allow spindle to cool completely, then run at reduced RPM while monitoring for alarm recurrence. Check ambient temperature around machine.

Spindle should cool to ambient temperature within 30-45 minutes after shutdown

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·PTC thermistor replacement required
  • ·Spindle drive module replacement needed
  • ·Spindle bearing replacement required
  • ·Drive parameter programming needed

Prevention

  • Maintain regular spindle cooling system cleaning
  • Monitor spindle load percentages during operation
  • Keep electrical cabinet filters clean
  • Use appropriate cutting parameters for material

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring gradual increase in spindle load before alarm
  • Not checking simple cooling system issues first
  • Assuming thermistor failure without proper testing
  • Running spindle immediately after alarm without cooling period
