Haas Alarm 1441 - Fifth Axis Home

Fifth Axis Home

This alarm indicates the fifth axis (B-axis or C-axis depending on machine configuration) failed to complete its homing sequence during initialization. The MOCON requires valid home switch input and encoder position feedback from the fifth axis servo system to establish reference zero. Machine operation is halted until fifth axis homing completes successfully.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 1441 occurs when the fifth axis (A or B rotary) fails to trigger its home switch during the reference home cycle within the programmed travel distance or timeout period. The NGC control cannot establish a valid zero reference position for the rotary axis, preventing machine operation until the home switch signal is properly detected.

Safety

  • Fifth axis rotary and trunnion tables can have significant mass and inertia. Before manually rotating the axis, ensure the machine is in EMERGENCY STOP to prevent unexpected servo movement. Do not place hands or fingers in pinch points between the rotary table and machine structure.
  • Motor brakes hold the fifth axis stationary when unpowered. Do not attempt to manually force the axis to rotate without first releasing the brake electrically or mechanically disengaging it per service manual instructions—excessive force can damage the brake disk, motor shaft, or worm gear assembly.
  • When inspecting or measuring voltage at the servo drive or relay panel, use insulated tools and avoid contact with adjacent live terminals. The control cabinet contains 120VAC and high-voltage DC bus voltages up to 400VDC that can cause severe shock.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Home Switch Status

Navigate to CURRENT COMMANDS > DIAGNOSTICS > INPUTS and observe the fifth axis home switch input (typically labeled A HOME or B HOME) while manually rotating the axis to the home position.

The input should change state clearly when the switch actuator passes the sensor

  2. 2

    Inspect Switch Mounting

Physically examine the home switch mounting bracket and hardware for looseness, damage, or misalignment. Check that the switch actuator properly engages the sensor target.

Lock out power and follow LOTO procedures before accessing moving components

  3. 3

    Verify Switch Wiring

Check the home switch wiring harness for damage, loose connections at the switch and control cabinet. Measure continuity and proper voltage at the switch connector.

Typical home switch voltage is 24VDC on Haas systems

  4. 4

    Replace Switch if Defective

If switch shows no continuity change or fails to activate, replace with Haas OEM proximity switch or limit switch maintaining exact mounting position and gap specifications.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Drive amplifier replacement required
  • ·Encoder feedback system failure
  • ·Major mechanical bearing replacement
  • ·Control system hardware failure

Prevention

  • Perform regular home switch cleaning and inspection
  • Monitor fifth axis movement for early signs of binding
  • Keep rotation path clear of chips and debris
  • Follow scheduled lubrication intervals

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring gradual increase in homing time
  • Not checking switch alignment after maintenance
  • Forcing axis movement when binding occurs
  • Modifying home parameters without documentation
