Haas Alarm 1440 - Fourth Axis Home

Fourth Axis Home

This alarm indicates the fourth axis (A-axis rotary table) failed to complete its homing sequence during power-up or after an emergency stop. The MOCON board monitors the home switch input and encoder feedback from the fourth axis servo amp to establish machine zero reference. Until homing completes successfully, the fourth axis remains disabled and positioning is unreliable.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 1440 occurs when the fourth axis (A-axis) fails to complete its reference return sequence during power-up or after E-stop recovery. The NGC control cannot locate or confirm the home switch position within the programmed travel limits or timeout period.

Safety

  • 4th axis position lost
  • ⚠️ Fourth axis position reference lost - verify workpiece alignment before resuming
  • Disconnect power to the CNC machine before performing any electrical troubleshooting.
  • Be aware of potential pinch points and moving parts when working around the fourth axis.
  • Ensure the axis is properly supported before loosening any mechanical components.
  • Use caution when manually jogging the axis to avoid collisions or damage.
  • Consult the machine's safety manual for specific safety precautions related to the fourth axis.
  • High voltage is present in the drive cabinet. Only qualified personnel should access the drive components.
  • Lockout/Tagout procedures must be followed before performing any maintenance or repair work.
  • 4th axis position is lost, which could lead to equipment malfunction or injury; Always verify machine stability before operation.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Home Switch Status

Press CURRENT COMMANDS, then INPUT, navigate to page showing home switch inputs. Manually rotate A-axis and observe HOME A switch status change.

The switch should activate within the last few degrees of rotation before the mechanical stop

  2. 2

    Inspect Switch Mounting

Verify home switch cam or dog is properly secured to rotary table and aligned with proximity switch. Check for loose mounting bolts or damaged cam.

Lock out power and follow LOTO procedures before manual inspection

  3. 3

    Test Switch Continuity

With power off, disconnect home switch connector and test continuity across switch terminals while manually actuating the switch mechanism.

Proximity switches should show resistance change, mechanical switches should show open/closed continuity

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Drive replacement required
  • ·Encoder replacement needed
  • ·Mechanical repairs beyond adjustment

Prevention

  • Regular rotary table lubrication per maintenance schedule
  • Keep home switch area clean and free of debris
  • Verify home switch alignment after any mechanical work

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring drive fault LEDs before troubleshooting homing
  • Adjusting parameters without understanding machine geometry
  • Forcing manual rotation with brakes engaged
