Haas Alarm 143 - Y-Axis Positive Overtravel

+Y Limit

The +Y axis limit switch has been triggered, indicating the Y-axis table has traveled beyond its normal software or hardware limit in the positive direction. This alarm halts all axis motion immediately and prevents further machine operation until the condition is cleared. The MOCON board monitors limit switch inputs from the machine frame and generates this fault when the +Y limit circuit opens or closes depending on switch configuration.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 143 +Y Limit occurs when the Y-axis exceeds its positive travel boundary, either by hitting the hardwired overtravel limit switch or violating the software limit in Parameter 43. This protective alarm immediately stops all motion to prevent damage to the ballscrew, ways, and machine structure.

Safety

  • Check for collision damage

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Current Position

Press [CURRENT COMMANDS] to view current Y-axis position in machine coordinates and compare to Parameter 43 value.

Machine coordinates show true position relative to home switches, not work coordinates

  2. 2

    Verify Parameter 43 Setting

Navigate to [SETTING] > [PARAMETERS] and check Parameter 43 (+Y Software Limit). Verify this matches your machine's actual travel capability.

Incorrect Parameter 43 values can cause premature limit alarms or allow overtravel damage

  3. 3

    Clear Alarm and Jog Away

Press [RESET] to clear alarm, then use [JOG] mode with [HANDLE JOG] or slow [JOG] keys to move Y-axis in negative direction.

Use 0.0001" increments initially to ensure safe movement away from limit

  4. 4

    Adjust Program or Setup

Review G-code program and work coordinate system (G54-G59) to ensure Y+ moves stay within Parameter 43 limits.

Always account for tool length and work offsets when calculating maximum travel

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Mechanical damage to ballscrew or ways
  • ·Servo motor or drive system problems
  • ·Repeated limit switch failures
  • ·Parameter corruption or control system issues

Prevention

  • Regularly verify Parameter 43 matches actual machine travel
  • Always use Graphics mode to verify program envelope before running
  • Establish work coordinates carefully with proper measurement
  • Perform regular limit switch function tests
  • Keep Y-axis ways clean and properly lubricated

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring work offset values when calculating travel limits
  • Setting Parameter 43 too large for actual machine capability
  • Bypassing limit switches instead of fixing root cause
  • Not accounting for tool length in travel calculations
  • Running programs without graphics verification
