Haas 142 - A-AXIS MOTOR Z FAULT | Haas CNC Alarm

A-AXIS MOTOR Z FAULT

This alarm indicates the A-axis rotary servo amplifier has detected an internal fault in the Z-phase encoder signal or motor feedback circuit. The servo amplifier on the IOCON or standalone servo module monitors encoder Z-pulse for commutation and position verification. Loss of Z-phase signal prevents proper motor commutation and the servo drive shuts down the A-axis to prevent potential crash or positioning errors.

Safety

  • Check for collision damage

Common Causes

  • A-axis encoder cable has damaged wiring, loose connector at motor or servo amplifier, or connector pins are corroded from coolant intrusion
  • Encoder Z-phase channel has failed internally due to bearing wear allowing rotor movement or contamination on optical disk inside motor encoder
  • Servo amplifier encoder input circuit on IOCON has failed or developed a cold solder joint on Z-phase input channel
  • Motor encoder power supply voltage from servo amp is out of specification due to failing capacitor or voltage regulator on drive board
  • Electrical noise from VFD, spindle drive, or improper cable shielding is corrupting Z-phase encoder signal during transmission to amplifier

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Step 1: Power down machine and inspect A-axis motor encoder connector and cable for physical damage, bent pins, or coolant contamination
  2. 2Step 2: Access Diagnostics page encoder display and observe A B and Z channel signals while manually rotating A-axis verifying Z-pulse appears once per revolution
  3. 3Step 3: Measure encoder power supply voltage at motor connector verifying 5VDC or 12VDC depending on encoder type is within plus or minus 5 percent tolerance
  4. 4Step 4: Swap A-axis encoder cable with known good cable from another axis temporarily to isolate cable fault versus motor encoder or amplifier issue
  5. 5Step 5: Replace A-axis motor encoder assembly if Z-channel signal is missing or intermittent and cable and connections test good
  6. 6Step 6: Replace servo amplifier module or IOCON board if encoder tests good with known working cable but Z-phase fault alarm continues to occur
