Haas Alarm 1201 - Drive Fan Fault

Drive Fan Fault

The drive fan fault indicates that the cooling fan for the servo amplifier or spindle drive module has failed or is running below the minimum required RPM. This is monitored by the MOCON board through a tachometer feedback signal from the fan itself. The machine will not operate until this is cleared because inadequate cooling will cause the drive modules to overheat and fail catastrophically.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 1201 fires when the servo drive's internal cooling fan fails mechanically, runs below the minimum RPM threshold monitored by the drive's tachometer circuit, or when the fan feedback signal is lost. The NGC control immediately shuts down the affected axis drive to prevent thermal damage to the IGBT power modules.

Safety

  • Live voltage is present inside the electrical cabinet even with E-stop pressed. Turn main disconnect OFF and verify with multimeter before touching connectors or components.
  • Servo drives contain large capacitors that retain lethal voltage for several minutes after power-off. Wait minimum 5 minutes after disconnect before working near drive terminals or internal components.
  • Do not bypass or jumper fan circuits to temporarily run the machine—drive will overheat rapidly and fail catastrophically, potentially causing fire or destroying multiple axis drives.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Power Down and Access Drive

Turn off main power, wait 5 minutes for capacitor discharge, then remove the electrical cabinet door to access the servo drive modules.

High voltage present - verify power off with multimeter before proceeding

  2. 2

    Visual Fan Inspection

Locate the affected axis drive (check alarm history for specific axis). Inspect the internal cooling fan for physical damage, debris, or seized rotor.

Use a flashlight to check for oil leakage from fan bearings or accumulated debris on fan blades

  3. 3

    Manual Fan Test

With power off, gently spin the fan blade by hand. It should rotate freely with slight resistance. Binding or grinding indicates bearing failure.

A healthy fan will coast for 2-3 seconds when spun manually

  4. 4

    Replace Drive Fan Assembly

Order Haas part number for the specific drive model. Disconnect fan connector, remove mounting screws, and install new fan with proper orientation for airflow direction.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Drive module replacement required
  • ·High voltage measurements needed
  • ·Multiple simultaneous drive faults
  • ·Axis calibration required after drive replacement

Prevention

  • Replace cabinet air filters every 3 months
  • Clean drive heat sinks quarterly
  • Monitor cabinet temperature during summer months
  • Inspect fan operation during weekly maintenance

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring cabinet ventilation requirements
  • Using excessive air pressure when cleaning drives
  • Failing to check tachometer signal when fan appears to run
  • Not verifying proper fan airflow direction during replacement
