Fanuc Alarm PS037 - Cutter Compensation Interference

CAN NOT CHANGE PLANE IN G41/G42

Fanuc alarm PS037: CAN NOT CHANGE PLANE IN G41/G42. The part program or machine configuration has an error related to this alarm condition. Review the block indicated in the alarm screen and correct the command per the Fanuc programming manual.

Root Cause Summary

PS037 occurs when cutter radius compensation (G41/G42) creates a mathematical interference where the tool path vectors intersect or the compensated path becomes impossible to calculate. This typically happens when the programmed geometry is smaller than the tool radius, acute angles cause overcutting conditions, or sequential moves create impossible compensation vectors that cannot maintain constant offset.

Safety

  • Tool will gouge if bypassed

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Review the program block number displayed with PS037. Check the geometry at and immediately after this block for internal radii, pocket dimensions, or slot widths that are smaller than 2x the tool radius.

  2. 2

Press OFFSET key and verify the tool geometry offset register (H or D code) being called. Check that the radius value in the geometry offset table is correct and not accidentally entered as diameter or in wrong units (mm vs inch).

  3. 3

Check parameters 5001-5004 (offset memory type configuration). Verify the offset number format matches your machine configuration (Type A/B/C) to ensure radius values are interpreted correctly.

  4. 4

Modify the part program to increase internal feature sizes to exceed 2x tool radius plus clearance, or select a smaller tool with appropriate radius compensation value and re-post the program.

Do not simply reduce offset value without verifying actual tool geometry or part will be oversized
