Fanuc Alarm 921 - SERVO ALARM (5-8 AXIS)

SERVO ALARM 921

A servo alarm has been detected on axes 5 through 8. Check each individual axis servo amplifier for a sub-alarm code.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc alarm 921 indicates a servo alarm has occurred on one or more axes in the 5th through 8th axis group (U, V, W, A, B, C axes depending on configuration). The master alarm 921 is triggered by a sub-alarm code stored in the individual servo amplifier; the actual fault condition must be diagnosed by reading the specific servo alarm code from the affected axis amplifier.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to DIAGNOSIS > SERVO screen and observe diagnostic numbers D0300-D0303 (for axes 5-8 respectively) to identify which axis triggered the alarm and note the servo alarm number displayed.

  2. 2

Check the servo amplifier LED display on the suspected axis drive module (axes 5-8). Record the LED blink pattern or alphanumeric code shown, cross-reference with the specific amplifier alarm list (αi series shows A0-A9, B0-B9, L0-L9, etc.).

  3. 3

Review parameters 1825#0-#7 (servo alarm detection mask) for the affected axis to verify alarm detection is enabled. Check parameter 2022 (rotary axis position loop gain) and 2023 (velocity loop gain) for unusual values that may cause instability on rotary axes.

  4. 4

If sub-alarm indicates overcurrent (A0, A1) or overload (A8), verify motor cable connections are secure, check for mechanical binding on the rotary axis, measure motor resistance phase-to-phase (should be balanced), and verify motor specifications match parameter 2020 (axis type) settings.

Do not repeatedly reset and test if overcurrent alarms occur - this may damage the amplifier power modules

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Servo amplifier hardware failure confirmed
  • ·Multiple axes affected simultaneously
  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Parameter backup/restore needed

Prevention

  • Regular encoder cable inspection
  • Maintain proper servo amplifier cooling
  • Periodic servo gain optimization
  • Monitor axis load conditions

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring sub-alarm codes
  • Adjusting servo gains without understanding system dynamics
  • Overlooking mechanical binding issues
  • Not checking all affected axes individually
