Fanuc 581 - Spindle through coolant error

SPINDLE THROUGH COOLANT ERROR

Fanuc spindle alarm 581: SPINDLE THROUGH COOLANT ERROR. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 581 indicates a failure in the through-spindle coolant system, typically caused by insufficient coolant pressure, faulty pressure switches, or solenoid valve malfunctions. The spindle drive monitors coolant pressure feedback and triggers this alarm when the system cannot establish or maintain the required pressure for through-spindle coolant delivery. This is a safety interlock to prevent spindle operation without adequate coolant flow during machining operations that require TSC.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check coolant tank level and verify main coolant pump is running and building pressure on the gauge.

  2. 2

Locate the TSC pressure switch (usually mounted near spindle head or coolant manifold) and verify electrical continuity when coolant pressure is applied manually.

Relieve coolant pressure before disconnecting pressure switch connections.

  3. 3

Check parameter 3703#4 (TSC pressure detection) and verify the pressure switch input signal at the PMC ladder (typically input address varies by machine - check I/O connection manual).

  4. 4

Inspect coolant filters and lines for blockages, replace filters if restriction is found, and verify pressure at the spindle inlet reaches specification.
