Fanuc Alarm 5010 - END OF RECORD

Spindle Alarm - Overheat

Spindle motor overheat alarm. The spindle motor internal temperature sensor has exceeded the allowable limit.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc alarm 5010 END OF RECORD occurs when the control detects an unexpected end-of-block (EOB) character or transmission termination during program execution or data transfer. This typically happens during DNC/drip-feed operations, memory card read operations, or RS-232C communication when data transmission is interrupted before program completion. The control expected more program data but received a premature termination signal.

Safety

  • Spindle damage risk
  • ⚠️ CRITICAL: Continued operation risks permanent spindle damage
  • Ensure machine power is OFF and locked out before performing any maintenance or inspection of the spindle motor, cooling system, or electrical components.
  • High voltage is present in the spindle drive and motor. Only qualified personnel should work on these components.
  • Allow sufficient time for the spindle to cool down before handling to avoid burns.
  • Be aware of rotating parts when the spindle is powered on. Keep hands and clothing clear.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and gloves, when working on the machine.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check RS-232C connection and cable integrity between CNC and external device. Verify proper grounding and shielding on communication cable.

  2. 2

Navigate to SYSTEM > PARAM and verify I/O channel parameters: P0020 (I/O channel selection), P0101-0102 (baud rate), P0103 (stop bit), P0104 (parity). Ensure settings match external device exactly.

  3. 3

Check parameter P3107.0 (TV check) - if set to 1, the control performs strict communication protocol checking. Temporarily set to 0 to bypass handshake verification for testing.

Disabling P3107.0 removes communication error checking. Re-enable after diagnostics.

  4. 4

Verify the transmitted program file contains proper end code (M30, M02, or M99). Use EDIT mode to check last lines of received data before alarm occurred.

Call a technician if:

  • ·Thermal sensor replacement required
  • ·Spindle motor bearing damage suspected
  • ·Cooling system major repairs needed

Prevention

  • Monitor spindle load regularly via diagnosis screen
  • Maintain proper coolant temperature and flow
  • Clean cooling fans and filters monthly
  • Avoid prolonged high-speed operation without adequate cooling

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring gradual spindle load increase over time
  • Running spindle immediately after thermal alarm without cooldown
  • Setting thermal parameters too aggressively
  • Blocking spindle motor ventilation with chips or debris
