Fanuc Alarm 501 - X Axis Negative Overtravel

Overtravel -X

Stored stroke check alarm. The axis has exceeded the stored stroke limit -X as defined in parameter 1320-1327.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc 501 OVER TRAVEL -n indicates the specified axis has exceeded the negative software travel limit defined by stored stroke check parameters. This occurs when the commanded position violates the negative boundary set in parameters 1321 (stored stroke check 1) or 1327 (stored stroke check 2), typically due to incorrect work offsets, tool length compensation, or programming errors that drive the axis beyond allowable machine travel.

Safety

  • Jog slowly away from limit
  • Verify position after recovery

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Press OFFSET button and check work coordinate system offsets (G54-G59). Navigate to CURRENT screen to identify active work offset. Verify offset values against machine setup documentation, especially for the axis indicated in the alarm.

  2. 2

Check tool length offsets (OFFSET > TOOL GEOM or TOOL WEAR screens). Examine offset number called by active H-code or D-code for excessive negative values that would position axis beyond travel limit.

  3. 3

Review MDI or program line that triggered alarm. Calculate actual machine position by adding program coordinate + work offset + tool offset. Compare to negative stored stroke limit in parameter 1321 (axis n, negative side).

  4. 4

Correct erroneous offset values. Reset alarm (RESET button), return axis to safe position using MPG or JOG mode, then rerun program from safe point.

Ensure machine coordinate position is within travel limits before jogging. Use POS > MACHINE display to verify absolute position.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter 1321 changes don't resolve alarm
  • ·Mechanical interference suspected
  • ·Encoder feedback issues

Prevention

  • Implement program simulation before first run
  • Establish work offset verification procedures
  • Regular parameter backup and documentation
  • Use soft limit margins in programming

Common Mistakes

  • Changing parameter 1321 without understanding machine geometry
  • Ignoring work offset accumulation effects
  • Mixing absolute and incremental programming modes
  • Not accounting for tool offset vector calculations
