Fanuc Alarm 382 - n AXIS: COUNT MISS (EXT)

SYSTEM ALARM 382

Fanuc alarm 382: SYSTEM ALARM 382. This alarm indicates a fault condition detected by the Fanuc control. Refer to the alarm number and name to identify the specific system or function involved.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 382 n AXIS: COUNT MISS (EXT) indicates a position discrepancy detected between the CNC and the external pulse coder (separate detector) on the specified axis. This occurs when the external encoder feedback position deviates beyond the allowable threshold set in Parameter 1826, typically due to encoder signal degradation, cable issues, or mechanical slippage between the motor and external detector.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check amplifier LED status. A red LED or specific codes on αi/βi series amplifiers indicate encoder feedback errors. Verify power to the external encoder (typically 5VDC on pin connections).

  2. 2

Navigate to DIAGNOSIS > SERVO and check diagnostic numbers D0300-D0307 for the affected axis to verify external encoder pulse count integrity and compare with motor encoder feedback.

  3. 3

Inspect external encoder cable (JD1A/JD1B connector at amplifier) for physical damage, proper shield grounding, and separation from power cables. Check connector pins for contamination or bent contacts. Measure cable continuity and insulation resistance (>10MΩ to ground).

Disconnect power before checking cable continuity and resistance

  4. 4

Temporarily increase Parameter 1826 (count miss detection level for external encoder) from default 500 pulses to 1000-2000 to determine if alarm is marginal. If alarm stops, cable/encoder is degrading. Replace cable and/or encoder rather than permanently increasing threshold.

Increasing P1826 masks the problem and reduces position accuracy - use only for diagnostics

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Parameter backup/restore needed
  • ·Mechanical alignment issues beyond basic coupling adjustment

Prevention

  • Regular encoder cable inspection
  • Maintain proper cable routing away from power lines
  • Periodic encoder signal monitoring
  • Keep encoder connections clean and dry

Common Mistakes

  • Changing servo parameters without backup
  • Working on encoder connections with power on
  • Ignoring intermittent alarms
  • Not checking mechanical coupling condition
