Fanuc Alarm 380 - Serial Spindle Communication Error

Serial Spindle Error

This alarm indicates a communication failure between the CNC and the serial spindle amplifier over the FSSB (Fanuc Serial Servo Bus) or optical fiber connection. The spindle axis has lost synchronization with the control, preventing spindle operation and halting machining. This is typically caused by signal integrity loss, hardware failure in the spindle amplifier, or incorrect parameter configuration for the serial spindle interface.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 380 indicates a broken or failed LED light source within the external separate pulse coder (serial or absolute encoder) on the specified axis. This alarm is generated when the servo amplifier detects insufficient light intensity from the encoder's LED through the optical disk, preventing proper position feedback. The encoder requires replacement as the LED is not a serviceable component.

Safety

  • Spindle control disabled

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check alarm history (ALARM > HISTORY) to confirm alarm 380 appears consistently on the same axis. Note which axis (n) is affected in the alarm message.

  2. 2

Access diagnostics screen (DIAGNOSIS > SERVO) and check position feedback status for the affected axis. Verify if position data is frozen or erratic, confirming encoder failure rather than cable issue.

  3. 3

Power down the system and inspect the external pulse coder (separate detector) physically for any visible damage, contamination on optical disk, or burnt marks. Check cable connections at both encoder and amplifier sides.

WARNING: Discharge servo amplifier capacitors and follow LOTO procedures. Do not attempt to disassemble the pulse coder as it is a sealed unit.

  4. 4

Replace the external pulse coder assembly with OEM Fanuc replacement. After installation, perform reference position return and verify encoder feedback via DIAGNOSIS > SERVO screen. Check parameters 1815 (serial encoder type) or 1820 (absolute encoder type) match new encoder specifications.

WARNING: Absolute encoders require battery backup verification and may need position data re-establishment using parameter 1815#4 (APC) after replacement.

Service Recommendedmedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Amplifier replacement needed
  • ·Parameter corruption suspected
  • ·Multiple related alarms present

Prevention

  • Regular encoder cable inspection
  • Maintain proper coolant sealing
  • Monitor encoder power supply stability
  • Keep parameter backups current

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring cable shield grounding requirements
  • Using non-FANUC replacement encoders
  • Incorrect parameter settings after replacement
  • Operating with contaminated encoder environment
