Fanuc Alarm 169 - ILLEGAL TOOL GEOMETRY DATA

FANUC ALARM 169

Incorrect tool figure data in interference check. Set correct data or select correct tool figure data.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 169 occurs when the CNC detects invalid or out-of-range tool geometry data during interference check calculations. This is typically caused by incorrect tool figure/shape parameters in the tool offset memory, undefined tool figure numbers, or corrupted tool geometry data that cannot be processed by the interference check algorithm.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Press OFFSET/SETTING button, select TOOL GEOM or TOOL OFFSET screen. Check the tool figure number (FIG or SHAPE column) for the active tool in the program.

  2. 2

Navigate to SYSTEM > PARAM and check parameter 5003 (tool figure data definition range). Verify the tool figure number is within the defined range (usually 0 to maximum defined figures).

  3. 3

Check parameters 13240-13249 (tool interference check settings) to confirm interference checking is properly configured and tool figure library is properly set.

  4. 4

Correct the tool figure number in the TOOL GEOM screen to a valid predefined figure, or set to 0 if interference check is not required for this tool.

Setting figure to 0 typically disables interference checking for that tool

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Memory diagnostic shows hardware failure
  • ·Parameter corruption persists after reload
  • ·Interference check parameters are unknown

Prevention

  • Regular backup of tool offset data
  • Monitor battery backup voltage
  • Validate tool measurements before data entry
  • Use parameter write protection when possible

Common Mistakes

  • Entering negative values where not allowed
  • Using undefined tool figure numbers
  • Exceeding system parameter limits
  • Not backing up data before changes
