Fanuc 40 - Interference in cutter compensation
Alarm 040 occurs when the CNC control detects a geometric interference condition during cutter compensation (G41/G42) execution. This happens when the programmed tool path creates a situation where the offset tool path cannot be calculated, typically due to acute angles, small features relative to tool radius, or incorrect approach/exit moves.

INTERFERENCE IN CUTTER COMPENSATION
Fanuc PS program alarm 40: INTERFERENCE IN CUTTER COMPENSATION. This alarm is triggered by an illegal or incorrectly formatted command in the part program, or a programming condition that the Fanuc control cannot execute.
Root Cause Summary
Alarm 040 occurs when the CNC control detects a geometric interference condition during cutter compensation (G41/G42) execution. This happens when the programmed tool path creates a situation where the offset tool path cannot be calculated, typically due to acute angles, small features relative to tool radius, or incorrect approach/exit moves.
Safety
Causes and Fixes
Review the alarm line number and examine the programmed geometry at that block and the preceding 3-5 blocks.
Check the tool offset register (geometry or wear) being used and verify the total radius value against the smallest features in the programmed path.
Reduce the tool radius value in the offset register or modify the program to use a smaller tool if the current tool is physically too large.
If geometry cannot be changed, add intermediate points or increase radii in the part program to accommodate the tool radius.
Ensure part print tolerances are maintained when modifying programmed geometry
