Siemens 840D 4621 - Invalid handwheel input for handwheel

Invalid handwheel input for handwheel

Siemens SINUMERIK 840D system notice 4621: Invalid handwheel input for handwheel. This is a system-level notification regarding machine data or configuration. Note the message details and take the indicated action.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 4621 fires when the machine data parameter $MN_HANDWHEEL_INPUT references a handwheel index that exceeds the 802D system's hardware limitation of maximum 2 directly linked handwheels. This occurs because the NCK is attempting to configure a handwheel input that cannot be physically supported or properly mapped on 802D control architectures.

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Access Siemens HMI or SINUMERIK Operate menu and navigate to Diagnostics > System Information to confirm control system type (802D vs 840D). Note the current system architecture.

  2. 2

Using Siemens SINUMERIK engineering software (e.g., ShopMill, ShopTurn configuration module) or direct NCK parameter editor, locate machine data parameter $MN_HANDWHEEL_INPUT. Check the numeric value assigned—it should be 1 or 2 for 802D systems only.

Do not modify parameters while CNC is in automatic mode or cycle execution.

  3. 3

If the value is 3 or higher, reduce $MN_HANDWHEEL_INPUT to either 1 or 2. If multiple handwheel functions are required, consider implementing handwheel selector logic via PLC instead of direct NCK mapping.

  4. 4

Save modified machine data and trigger NCK restart via HMI (power cycle or soft reset) to reload $MN_HANDWHEEL_INPUT validation. Verify alarm 4621 no longer appears in Diagnostics > Alarms.
