Siemens 840D 22101 - Channel block spindle maximum speed for encoder

Channel block spindle maximum speed for encoder

Siemens SINUMERIK 840D alarm 22101 indicates the spindle encoder speed limit was exceeded during a G33, G95, G96, or G97 operation. The spindle speed caused the encoder to exceed its rated maximum frequency, making position or speed feedback unreliable.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 22101 fires when spindle encoder speed exceeds maximum measurable frequency during synchronized spindle operations (G33 thread cutting, G95/G96 feed-per-rev, G97 constant surface speed). The encoder cannot provide reliable position feedback at the commanded setpoint, causing loss of synchronization reference.

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to Diagnostics > Machine Data > Spindle Parameters (MD 20100-20150 range) in NCK menu. Locate MD20130 (max encoder speed [rpm]) or MD20131 (max encoder speed [Hz]).

  2. 2

Cross-reference encoder datasheet maximum frequency rating. Verify MD20130/MD20131 is set to at least 90% of encoder specification to account for signal quality margin.

Setting value >95% of encoder spec risks intermittent synchronization loss.

  3. 3

Compare alarm block number (%3) and commanded speed against actual spindle max RPM. If commanded speed is within spindle capability, increase MD20130/MD20131 and retrigger G33/G95/G96/G97 block.

  4. 4

Activate Machine Data in HMI, save changes, perform warm restart (soft reset) to load updated encoder limits into NCK.
