Root Cause Summary

SIEMENS alarm 21617 Drive Ground Fault occurs when the SINAMICS drive unit detects an insulation breakdown or ground fault in the motor circuit, power cables, or drive internal components. The drive's integrated ground fault monitoring continuously checks for leakage currents exceeding the configured threshold in parameter P30135.

Safety

  • Only qualified personnel should diagnose and clear control alarms; follow the machine builder's safety procedures and lockout/tagout where hardware work is required.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power Down and Lock Out System

Switch off main power and engage lockout/tagout procedures. Ensure all capacitors are discharged before proceeding.

High voltage present - wait minimum 5 minutes after power down for capacitor discharge

  2. 2

    Perform Insulation Resistance Test

Using a 500V megohmmeter, test insulation resistance between each motor cable phase (U, V, W) and ground. Minimum acceptable value is 1 MΩ per IEC standards.

Test at motor terminal box and drive output terminals separately to isolate cable vs motor issues

  3. 3

    Inspect Cable Physical Condition

Examine entire cable run for mechanical damage, pinch points, sharp edges, or contamination. Pay special attention to cable entry points and bend radii.

Use thermal imaging to detect hot spots indicating partial insulation failure

  4. 4

    Check Ground Fault Parameters

In STARTER or SINAMICS Commissioning Tool, verify P30135 (Ground fault monitoring) is set appropriately for your motor cable length and type.

For long motor cables >50m, consider adjusting P30135 to account for normal cable capacitance

Service Recommendedmedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Ground fault persists after cable/motor verification
  • ·Drive internal component failure suspected
  • ·Insulation resistance values below 1MΩ
  • ·Multiple related alarms present

Prevention

  • Regular insulation resistance testing of motor and cables
  • Maintain proper environmental conditions in electrical enclosures
  • Follow proper EMC installation practices
  • Periodic inspection of cable routing and support

Common Mistakes

  • Disabling ground fault monitoring permanently instead of fixing root cause
  • Testing insulation with power applied
  • Ignoring proper EMC installation requirements
  • Not checking both motor and cable separately during diagnosis
