Siemens 21620 - Axis Emergency braking ramp activated
Alarm 21620 fires when the SINAMICS drive loses communication with the motor encoder feedback system, typically due to DRIVE-CLiQ network issues, encoder cable problems, or encoder hardware failure. The drive's safety monitoring detects communication timeouts or signal integrity errors and immediately disables the axis to prevent uncontrolled motion.

Safety
Causes and Fixes
Check DRIVE-CLiQ Cable Connections
Power down system and inspect all DRIVE-CLiQ cable connections from CU320 to motor encoder. Ensure orange DRIVE-CLiQ cables are fully seated and locking tabs engaged.
Always power down before disconnecting DRIVE-CLiQ cables to prevent component damage
Verify Cable Integrity
Check DRIVE-CLiQ cable for physical damage, kinks, or excessive bending near connectors. Measure cable continuity if damage is suspected.
DRIVE-CLiQ cables should not be bent tighter than 10x cable diameter during installation
Test with Known Good Cable
Replace suspected DRIVE-CLiQ cable with known good spare and test axis operation to isolate cable as root cause.
Keep spare DRIVE-CLiQ cables of common lengths in your service kit
Check DRIVE-CLiQ Topology
Access STARTER software, navigate to Project > DRIVE-CLiQ > Topology and verify all encoder components show 'OK' status in the network view.
Red X marks in topology view indicate failed DRIVE-CLiQ components
