Siemens 840D 17640 - Channel block spindle operation for transformed axis not
Alarm 17640 occurs when a spindle operation (M3/M4/M5) is commanded on an axis that is simultaneously active as a geometry axis within a kinematic transformation. SINUMERIK cannot execute spindle functions on axes involved in 5-axis or multi-axis transformations, as the transformation framework controls the axis motion independently.

Channel block spindle operation for transformed axis not
Siemens SINUMERIK alarm 17640: Channel block spindle operation for transformed axis not. This alarm indicates a fault or error condition on the SINUMERIK 840D control. Refer to the Siemens SINUMERIK alarm documentation for the complete description and remedy.
Root Cause Summary
Alarm 17640 occurs when a spindle operation (M3/M4/M5) is commanded on an axis that is simultaneously active as a geometry axis within a kinematic transformation. SINUMERIK cannot execute spindle functions on axes involved in 5-axis or multi-axis transformations, as the transformation framework controls the axis motion independently.
Safety
Causes and Fixes
Examine the NC block at error location. Identify the axis referenced in parameter %3 of the alarm message and confirm spindle command (M3/M4/M5) exists in block %2.
Note the exact axis name and spindle speed value for reference.
Access Siemens HMI > Diagnosis > Machine Data > Transformation Parameters (MD32000 range). Review TRAFO_TYPE and TRAFO_AXES declarations to confirm which axes are geometry axes versus tool axes.
MD32003 (TRAFO_AXES) defines geometry axis assignment; spindle axis must NOT appear here if spindle operation is required.
Cross-reference the spindle axis assignment in MD35200 (Spindle Parameters) with the transformation geometry axis list. Verify spindle axis is NOT listed as a geometry axis in the TRAFO configuration.
Modify the NC program: either (a) remove the spindle command from blocks where transformation is active, (b) deactivate transformation (G52.2 with zero offset) before spindle command, or (c) reconfigure transformation to exclude spindle axis from geometry axes.
If using multi-tasking, ensure spindle and transformation commands do not execute in overlapping blocks on the same channel.
