Okuma OSP Alarm D 4683 - MCS Rotary encoder 5 initialization failure

MCS Rotary encoder 5 initialization failure

The MCS drive failed to initialize rotary encoder 5 (an auxiliary/other encoder) on the axis named in the object during power-up. The axis has no valid feedback from that encoder until initialization completes.

Common Causes

  • Failed rotary encoder 5 unit
  • Encoder cable or connector fault preventing the initialization handshake
  • Encoder power supply problem from the drive
  • Contamination or damage at the encoder read head

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Identify the axis from the alarm object and inspect the cable and connector of rotary encoder 5 for damage, oil ingress or bent pins; reseat both ends.
  2. 2Cycle power and watch whether the encoder initializes; a persistent failure on the same axis points to the encoder or its dedicated cable rather than a transient glitch.
  3. 3Swap the encoder cable with a known-good cable to rule out a wiring fault before condemning the encoder.
  4. 4If wiring is good, replace rotary encoder 5 with the correct unit as the manual's corrective action directs, then re-home the axis and verify feedback.
