KUKA Robot KRC0494 - Overflow

Overflow

This overflow alarm indicates that a value being assigned to a variable exceeds the range supported by its declared data type. For example, assigning a number greater than 255 to a char variable or a value exceeding the limits of an int or real data type causes this error during execution or compilation.

Common Causes

  • Assigning numeric values exceeding the maximum range of char (0-255) or other small integer types
  • Mathematical operations producing results larger than the target variable type can accommodate
  • Type casting or implicit conversion from a larger data type to a smaller incompatible type
  • Sensor or external input values not being validated or clamped to acceptable ranges before assignment
  • Incorrect array index calculations resulting in values exceeding the array dimension limits

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Identify the specific variable and assignment statement causing the overflow using the error line reference
  2. 2Verify the declared data type of the target variable and confirm it can accommodate the source value range
  3. 3Review the source of the problematic value (sensor input, calculation result, external data) and validate its range
  4. 4Change the target variable to a larger data type (char to int, int to real) if the value range requires it
  5. 5Implement range validation or clamping logic to ensure values stay within the acceptable bounds for the target data type
  6. 6Add explicit type conversion with bounds checking or use KRL built-in functions like MIN and MAX to constrain values before assignment
