KRC0500

KUKA Robot KRC0500 - String too long

String too long

This alarm occurs when attempting to assign a string value to a character array that is not large enough to hold all characters in the source string. The declared array size must be greater than the length of the string being assigned, including space for the null terminator in KRL string handling.

Common Causes

  • Assigning a string literal longer than the declared array dimension to a char array variable
  • Dynamic string operations concatenating or appending text that exceeds the predefined array size
  • Incorrect calculation of required array size when copying string data from external sources or device inputs
  • Using fixed-size arrays for strings when variable-length string types would be more appropriate
  • String input from file I/O or communication channels not being validated for length before assignment

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Locate the problematic string assignment using the alarm reference to identify the target array variable
  2. 2Measure the actual length of the string being assigned, including any null terminator requirements in KRL
  3. 3Increase the declared array dimension to accommodate the string length plus appropriate buffer space
  4. 4Review all potential string sources and calculate the maximum length that could be assigned to the variable
  5. 5Consider using KRL string type variables instead of fixed-size char arrays if dynamic string length is required
  6. 6Implement string length validation and truncation logic before assignment to prevent future overflow conditions
