HEIDENHAIN 251-0D92 - Communication error when reading the configuration data

Communication error when reading the configuration data

Internal oscilloscope experienced a communication error while reading configuration data from the system.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm specifically indicates that the control's PLC or main processor failed to successfully retrieve stored configuration parameters from a hardware component during a read operation. The failure occurs at the communication protocol level when accessing EEPROM-stored data, suggesting either data corruption, hardware communication failure on the EnDat/digital bus, or a component-level electronics fault preventing proper data exchange.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Identify affected axis or component

Power on the control and note which axis or component triggers the alarm. Check the alarm detail text for specific node or axis identification. Navigate to Diagnostics > Component Overview to see which components show error status.

The alarm often appears immediately after control boot when the PLC attempts initial configuration readback - the timing can help identify the component.

  2. 2

    Access drive diagnostic information

Navigate to MOD > Diagnostics > Drive Status and select the affected axis. Review the encoder and drive status fields for EEPROM error indicators or configuration checksum failures.

Look specifically for EnDat error counters or EEPROM access error flags in the detailed drive status display.

  3. 3

    Attempt encoder re-initialization

For encoder-related configuration errors, use MOD > System Parameters > Encoder Settings and perform an encoder initialization procedure. This may rewrite default configuration data to the encoder EEPROM.

Encoder initialization will reset position reference - rehoming will be required after this operation.

  4. 4

    Restore configuration from backup

If configuration data is corrupted, restore axis parameters from a known good backup using TNCopt software or from the control's archive (MOD > File Management > System Files > Restore Configuration).

Always maintain current configuration backups after successful commissioning or parameter changes to enable quick recovery from EEPROM corruption.

Service Recommendedmedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Hardware test failures
  • ·Need for internal module replacement
  • ·Software compatibility issues
  • ·Internal bus timing problems

Prevention

  • Regular TNC software updates
  • Avoid power interruptions during oscilloscope operations
  • Monitor system performance to prevent communication overload

Common Mistakes

  • Modifying internal bus timing parameters without authorization
  • Interrupting hardware diagnostic tests
  • Ignoring software version compatibility requirements
