HEIDENHAIN 236-A006 - ProfiNet: Error during assignment of drives

ProfiNet: Error during assignment of drives

The TNC cannot assign an axis to a ProfiNet-connected drive. Either the configuration data is wrong or there is a fault in a drive.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm indicates a fundamental mismatch between the TNC control's configured axis-to-drive mapping and the actual ProfiNet devices detected on the network during initialization. The control expects specific drives at designated ProfiNet station addresses but cannot establish proper assignment due to configuration errors, addressing conflicts, or communication failures during the network startup phase.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Access ProfiNet drive configuration

Press MOD key → select 'ProfiNet' → 'Drive Configuration'. Document the current axis assignment showing which TNC axis (X, Y, Z, etc.) is mapped to which ProfiNet station address.

Take a screenshot or write down the complete configuration before making changes - you may need to reference the original setup.

  2. 2

    Verify physical drive station addresses

Access each drive's front panel or configuration interface and confirm the ProfiNet station address matches what is configured in the TNC. Check rotary switches or drive parameter P918 (typical for Heidenhain drives) for the assigned address.

Do not change drive addresses while the system is powered and ProfiNet is active - always power down completely first.

  3. 3

    Correct axis-to-address mapping

In MOD → ProfiNet → Drive Configuration, assign each TNC axis to the correct ProfiNet station address matching the physical drives. Ensure no duplicate assignments exist.

The station address must match exactly - even being off by one digit will trigger this alarm.

  4. 4

    Save configuration and restart

Save the modified configuration, perform a complete power cycle of the control and drives (not just a control restart), and monitor the startup sequence for successful drive assignment.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·ProfiNet interface module replacement needed
  • ·Multiple drive hardware failures
  • ·Complex network topology issues

Prevention

  • Regularly backup ProfiNet configurations
  • Perform periodic cable inspection
  • Monitor drive status LEDs during operation
  • Keep spare ProfiNet cables and terminators

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing standard Ethernet cables with ProfiNet
  • Forgetting network termination resistors
  • Not matching physical drive addresses to configuration
  • Attempting configuration changes while system is running
