HEIDENHAIN 236-A204 - ProfiNet: Drive does not react

ProfiNet: Drive does not react

This TNC7/TNC 640 system error indicates The drive does not react. Possible causes. The control has detected an abnormal state that requires attention.

Root Cause Summary

The TNC control has detected that a configured ProfiNet drive node is not responding within the expected cyclic communication window. This is specifically a ProfiNet fieldbus communication failure between the control and an inverter module, not an internal drive fault, though hardware faults can trigger communication loss.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Identify Affected Drive

Note the drive number %1 from alarm display. Cross-reference in MOD > Machine Configuration > Axis Assignment to determine which physical axis and inverter module corresponds to this number.

Drive numbering starts at 0 for X-axis. On multi-UMC systems, note which cabinet and module position matches the alarm number.

  2. 2

    Inspect ProfiNet Cable Integrity

Physically trace the green ProfiNet cable from TNC PL6xxx communication board to the affected UEC/UMC inverter. Check for kinks, cuts, or loose M12/RJ45 connections at both ends. Verify cable click-lock engagement.

Do not disconnect ProfiNet cables while control is powered on - this may cause additional alarms or configuration loss.

  3. 3

    Verify ProfiNet Topology

Access MOD > Device Management > ProfiNet and check network topology diagram. Affected drive will show red icon or 'No Response' status. Verify daisy-chain sequence matches physical installation.

ProfiNet requires proper line termination. Last device in chain must have termination resistor active or termination plug installed.

  4. 4

    Test Cable with Known Good

If available, temporarily swap the ProfiNet cable with a known working segment. Use only industrial ProfiNet-certified cables (CAT5e minimum, shielded). Standard Ethernet patch cables may cause intermittent failures.

Heidenhain recommends max 10m cable length between ProfiNet nodes. Longer distances require ProfiNet switches with IRT capability.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Drive shows internal hardware faults
  • ·Multiple drives affected simultaneously
  • ·ProfiNet configuration requires complete rebuild

Prevention

  • Regularly inspect ProfiNet cable connections for wear
  • Monitor drive diagnostic counters monthly
  • Keep spare ProfiNet cables and switches in inventory
  • Document ProfiNet configuration changes

Common Mistakes

  • Swapping drives without updating ProfiNet addresses
  • Using standard Ethernet cables instead of ProfiNet certified cables
  • Ignoring intermittent communication warnings
  • Power cycling drives without checking for mechanical binding
